Two shootings kill 27 people and hurt 26 in South Africa

Two shootings in South Africa killed 27 people and hurt 26 others within a few hours. One attack was at a bar in Wedela, near Johannesburg. The other was at a place where people eat and drink in Lwandle, near Cape Town. Police were looking for the attackers on Sunday, and no one had been arrested.

Eight men attacked the bar on Saturday night. Police said the men “opened fire on those outside,” meaning they began shooting at people outside. Then they went inside and kept shooting. Seventeen people died, including 13 men and four women, and 15 people were hurt. The attackers took phones from some people. Two vehicles were also set on fire.

Gunmen attacked the place in Lwandle early on Sunday. Ten people died and 11 were hurt. Five died at the scene, and five more died in hospital. Police had not said why either attack happened.

South Africa has had high levels of violent crime for years. Police figures say an average of 58 people were murdered each day from January through March. The week before, 11 people were killed in a shooting at a house near Durban. Gun violence has often been linked to fights between gangs and illegal mining, which means mining without permission. But police have not said these were reasons for the two attacks. The shootings add to a wider problem, while police have not arrested anyone or confirmed why they happened.
