Denmark and Greenland say a US deal on Greenland keeps the island's sovereignty

The United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement about Greenland. Greenland is a large, icy island in the Arctic. It belongs to Denmark, but it governs itself.

President Donald Trump said on Friday that the deal gives the United States "permanent control over security" in Greenland. He also said the US will start building a larger military presence there "immediately".

Denmark and Greenland said the deal does not change who owns Greenland. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the leader of Greenland, said the agreement respects the island's sovereignty, which means Greenland stays in charge of itself. Denmark's foreign minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, said next week could be a good week for Greenland, Denmark and the United States.

The deal is expected to be signed next week at the United Nations. But many details are still secret. We do not know how big the US military presence will be, or whether the US will get power over foreign policy in Greenland.

The agreement comes after months of trouble. Trump wanted the US to control Greenland, and he did not say no to using force. Denmark and Greenland always said the island is not for sale. Now the parliaments of both countries must agree before the deal starts.

Not everyone is happy. Marianne Hansen, a retired chef in Nuuk, said: "Trump should stay far, far, far away from Greenland."
