Trump threatens Iran but says US officials talked with mediators

US President Donald Trump told world leaders at the United Nations on Tuesday that he might attack Iran again or make a deal. “I have a big decision to make,” he said. Later, Trump said US representatives had met people helping the US and Iran talk for three hours. He gave few details, and no deal was announced.

Trump said US and Israeli action had stopped Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, a very powerful weapon. He said keeping Iran from getting one was a main goal. Some members of Iran’s delegation left the room while Trump spoke about US military action. Trump said he expected a deal after November’s US midterm elections, when people vote for Congress. He also asked other countries to put economic pressure on Iran so it would come to talks.

After the speech, Trump said US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had met Iranian mediators, people who help the two sides talk, not Iranian officials directly. This means there was contact, but it does not show that both sides agreed on a way to end the war.

The war has raised oil prices and caused problems for the world economy. At the same meeting, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that countries were becoming more divided. Trump focused instead on US strength. The decision matters because the war’s effects are already reaching beyond the two countries.
