In September, dengue killed 148 people in Bangladesh. That was more than three times the 43 deaths in August. Now people who study dengue say it may spread more in October. Kabirul Bashar, who studies mosquitoes at Jahangirnagar University, says rain that fell not long ago may help dengue spread.
People who study dengue say rain can lead to more people getting dengue 45 to 60 days later. October is usually a month when many people get dengue. Aedes mosquitoes carry dengue, and they now live outside big cities too. So dengue is a problem all over Bangladesh.
Since January, 245 or more people have died from dengue, and 79,620 people have gone to hospital. Measles has also killed more than 1,100 children this year. Hospitals help people with both health problems, and it is hard for them to help everyone at the same time. There is no medicine just for dengue. People who are very sick with dengue need help in a hospital.
Zahid Hasan’s four-year-old son got better from dengue not long ago. Zahid said, “There are a lot of mosquitoes where we live.” People who study dengue say spray is not enough to stop dengue. People also need to get rid of water that does not move, where mosquitoes grow. This can help stop dengue and make it easier for hospitals to help people with measles too.
